One of the biggest tournaments of the year was entering its final stretch as the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational took place at Firestone on Sunday.

But as Sergio Garcia and eventual winner Rory McIlroy battled for victory, the drama took an extraordinary twist: Garcia’s errant tee shot on the third hole at Firestone struck a fan’s finger and knocked the diamond clean out of her engagement ring.

Garcia arrived on the spot after his ball sailed wayward to find a female fan in the gallery standing without a very important piece of jewellery on her hand. Apparently the drive hit her in the finger, smashing the diamond out of its settting – where it got lost in the famously thick, lush Firestone rough.

So deep is the grass, in fact, that the diamond went missing. Fans and officials, normally used to helping out in the search for balls, took to their hands and knees to look for it – while Garcia, distraught at what he’d done asked someone to get the woman’s contact details for him so that he could reimburse her in case it couldn’t be found.

Luckily for the fan – and for Garcia- a few minutes later the diamond was recovered by another patron in the gallery. All was right in the world of golf once more; though Garcia’s aim didn’t improve throughout the rest of the day as he laboured to a round of 71 that helped give McIlroy a two-shot victory.
